On Saturday 9th July, St John Ambulance, Jersey competed at the National First Aid Finals Competition held at the Warning Zone in Leicester, UK which is a purpose built industrial area for health and safety training for industry and educational establishments. It’s purpose built, lifelike settings add a depth of reality to the tests.
The St Martin Cadet Team; comprising of George Tidy (17), Emily Le Gallais (16), Edouard Parslow (15) and Magda Banach (15) completed a team test where they had 2 injured casualties plus another person trapped on the live side of an electrified railway track. They also had pairs competitions in which Emily and Edouard had to perform baby CPR and deal with a distressed parent. At the same time George and Magda had to enter a building site and tend to 2 casualties following a fall on the site. They had to manage their own health and safety as well as caring for the casualties involved.
The Mountbatten Badger team: comprising of Emma Gavey (10) and Sophie Hewitt (9) were given an activity test in which they had to complete a picture quiz, word cards, a word search, perform an initial assessment and recovery position and apply an arm sling to a casualty. Following this the pair then had to treat 2 casualties in their first aid scenario, which took place in a grave yard. The casualties had collided and one had a head injury with considerable bleeding and the other had a fractured ankle.
Commissioner for youth, Christine Gavey said “All teams that compete at this Level have won at a District Level to earn a place at National Level. The teams all did very well and kept their cool, despite the tough competition.”
The Cadet team placed 9th overall and the Badger team placed 3rd overall, taking home Bronze Medals and the 3rd Place Trophy for the 2nd year in a row.
