The Polish community in Jersey is to have its own cultural centre thanks to a joint initiative between the Honorary Consul for Poland in Jersey and the Parish of St Helier.
First floor offices to the rear of the Town Hall, formerly occupied by the Alliance Française, have been offered as a cultural centre for use by the Polish community and all islanders interested in the Polish language and culture.
The St Helier Polish Committee will oversee the project and pay rent to the Parish for the use of the premises. Activities in the centre will include the regular issuing of passports by visiting officials from the Polish consulate in London, which has previously been carried out at the Town Hall; there will also be opportunities for Polish language learning, meetings of groups involved in promoting Polish culture, and advice and support for members of the Polish community in Jersey.
The St Helier Polish Committee also organises the annual Polish Festival at the Weighbridge which is being held from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th July. The Committee receives a grant from the Parish of St Helier, along with the Parish’s other twinning committees representing France, Germany and Madeira.
The Polish Cultural Centre will be formally opened on Thursday 7th July at noon by by Mr Dariusz Laska, Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the United Kingdom.
