Trading Standards has become aware of a fire risk affecting the door lock mechanism on Whirlpool washing machines sold under the Hotpoint and Indesit brands.
THIS IS A SEPARATE ISSUE FROM PREVIOUS ONES YOU MAY BE AWARE OF REGARDING TUMBLE DRIERS.
The affected machines were made between October 2014 and February 2018 with the model numbers listed below. If you have had a Hotpoint or Indesit washing machine supplied to you since October 2014 you are advised to check the model number which can be found on a label inside the door. If you think your machine may be effected then you can go to https://washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk or call 0800 316 1442 to check the specific serial number. Trading Standards have a list of the affected models and can be contacted on 01481 234567 if you are unable to access the information on line or through your supplier.
If you have an affected machine then you are advised to unplug it and not to use it until it has been repaired. The manufacturer has advised that if you must use it you should set the temperature to a maximum of 20C as this should minimise the risk. We understand that Whirlpool are planning to begin a recall of affected models and offer a replacement or repair, but that this is unlikely to begin until early January. Please keep your eyes open for more information from Whirlpool in January on what to do to progress replacement of an affected appliance.
Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service do attend fires involving white goods and advise members of the public to check their washing machines to see if they are affected. We appreciate that it is never a good time to stop using your washing machine and that it will be particularly frustrating at this time of year, however safety is our primary concern and islanders should be aware of this important issue. Trading standards hopes that despite this you have a safe and merry Christmas.
