This week, Mr Richard ‘Dick’ Rainsbury has retired from the NHS and Guernsey Health Services as one of the UK’s leading reconstructive breast surgeons.

As a pioneer of ‘oncoplastic’ breast surgery (a term which describes the use of plastic surgery techniques to treat breast cancer), he started treating women in Guernsey almost 30 years ago. In the UK and abroad, Mr Rainsbury became a leading figure in the world of breast cancer research and breast reconstruction, eventually becoming the president of the Association of Breast Surgery.

Despite his gradually increasing notoriety and demands on his time, Mr Rainsbury has always had a soft spot for Guernsey and it's Islanders and, over the years, his role has changed depending on the expertise on the island.  Most recently, he helped to set up an ‘on-island’ reconstructive and oncoplastic service with one of his past trainees, Mr Thomas Fysh at the Medical Specialist Group and the Guernsey Breast Care Unit.

Mr Rainsbury leaves a service which is proud to have been associated with him and dozens of patients who have personally benefited from his unrivalled skill and warm bedside manner. Mr Fysh and his colleagues wish him all the best in his retirement and would remind him that he is always welcome here.
