An event which encourages people to get active, move more and enjoy the outside will also benefit the specialist care provided by Les Bourgs Hospice.
The 30 walks in 30 days challenge is open to individuals or teams of 4 and will run from 1-30th April. Individuals can sign up to walk 10,000 steps or a daily mile for each day of the challenge which supports the Health Improvement Commission’s “Be Active” work stream. Inspiration for walking routes is signposted to the Commission’s “walk this way” campaign, Visit Guernsey’s website, National Trust of Guernsey’s walking routes and the Ruettes Tranquilles’ online guide or app.
The team entry (4 people) offers the option to convert steps to mileage to see where the team could get to in the world in 30 days (eg 4 people walking 10,000 steps every day would cover about 600 miles to reach Spain). Alternatively, another team can be challenged to sign up to see who can accrue the most steps during the month (think inter-office or inter-firm rivalry). This is a fantastic opportunity for corporates to link in health and well-being strategies for employees whilst also supporting a local charity.
We all know the recommended 10,000 steps a day but how many of us actually hit that target (especially doing a desk job)? This challenge will help participants rethink how they can fit exercise into their day to build sustainable habits which will hopefully continue after the event has finished. It may help change commuting habits, be a chance to get some “me-time” or provide a focus to catch up with family or friends.
Liz Stonebridge, Fundraising Administrator at Les Bourgs Hospice says “There are so many physical and mental health benefits to walking but with busy, modern lifestyles we often don’t walk enough. This fundraising challenge aims to reinforce the excellent work of the Health Improvement Commission but also add an element of fun and competitiveness with the new team option. We are hoping that businesses will encourage employees to sign up to align with their health and wellbeing strategies. We are very grateful to Appleby for their continued support of this event which means that 100% of money raised goes directly to supporting free, specialist care for patients and their loved ones”.
More information about the event including how to register (£15 for adults, £5 for U18s, £60 for a team of 4) can be found at www.lesbourgshospice.org.gg.
