Each year at the GSPCA we hold Dog and Cat First Aid Courses.

For over a decade, we have been running dog and cat first aid courses which help teach owners and pet lovers how to save the life of their pet or animal.

Last Tuesday 6 dog owners and 1 member of the GSPCA Work 2 Benefit placement attended the first GSPCA Dog First Aid Course of 2024. Last night we held our first Cat First Aid course of 2024 and greeted 7 attendees made of GSPCA team members, Work 2 Benefit placements and cat owners.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 25 years working in the field of animal rescue runs the training and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team sees cases of animal first aid daily here in Guernsey.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said, “We had a lovely evening last Tuesday teaching dog first aid to the 7 attendees and a wonderful evening last night teaching the 7 more attendees Cat First Aid.”

“Both groups were fantastic and all so keen to learn.”

“At the end, everyone got a certificate and we got a quick pic with some of the group.”

“The next courses take place in November but you can book your place now.”

“From Police Officers to GSPCA team members, members of the public to an assistance dog we have trained a real variety of individuals wanting to learn how to save dogs' lives.”

“Those that have attended have learned to save dogs, cats and other animals' lives and although we hope those attending never have to use the skills at least they will now know what to do in many circumstances.”

“We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over seven years and have trained over 400 participants to help save animals' lives.”

"We have ‘Casper’ who is our model first aid dog a bit like the Annie doll many may know for humans and he is a great way to show and learn how to carry out CPR on an unconscious dog."

“From dealing with dogs and cats choking to heat stroke we cover a huge range of topics and life-saving techniques that could really help save a pet's life.”

“We always hope that the skills learned will not be needed but we have been told of circumstances of these skills helping in real life situations.”

"As owners of pets, our worst fear is not knowing what to do if our four-legged friend has an injury and this training helps pet owners learn and understand ways to help save your pets life."

“It is £25 per person and you can book online or call 257261.”

“A huge thank you to all that supported past events and we look forward to seeing those keen to learn in the upcoming events.”
