WTO membership provides "new opportunities for trade"

Wednesday 23 October 2019

The extension of the UK's WTO membership to Guernsey will enhance the Bailiwick's "world class Intellectual Property environment".

That is the view of the Intellectual Property Commercial Group (IPCG), who have welcomed the announcement that Guernsey will have membership following the UK's departure from the EU.

Group Chairman John Ogier said that as part of this process, the IPCG understands that the UK will work with the Bailiwick in its TRIPS compliance and will extend the Paris Convention on Industrial Property to the Bailiwick.

"This will further enhance the Bailiwick's world class Intellectual Property environment that includes its legislation, on-line registry at the Guernsey Registry, legal services and professional practitioners. It will strengthen the position of Guernsey as a place of substance and value for Intellectual Property rich businesses."

"We believe that in the longer term, this will open new opportunities for the development of trade in goods and services internationally, especially if the UK progresses with Free Trade Agreements post-Brexit, as by means of the WTO extension, Guernsey will be able to participate by inclusion and extension in these agreements.

"The IPCG commends the States of Guernsey for their close working with industry in achieving this successful outcome."
