Two school leavers building careers at Specsavers

Specsavers is funding two school leavers through a career development programme, allowing them to study for a professional optical qualification whilst working in store at the same time.

Dominic Drysdale and Archie Ellis, both Clinical Assistants, left school earlier this summer - with both saying they didn't have much idea of what career path they would like to take.

Although Mr Ellis knew he wanted to work in the health industry, he needed support on his next steps.

While looking into his options ahead of the end of his final school term he was offered a part-time role at Specsavers' Guernsey store, in the Market.

"Originally, I was in need of a part-time job and a friend referred me to Specsavers. I started part-time and quickly learnt this was the place I wanted to be," he said.

"I was offered a full-time position where I was given a clear career pathway and I haven’t looked back since.

"I’ve started my Cert 3 (BTEC) and the support that Specsavers has given is incredible. I’m now in a position to further my knowledge and gain a professional qualification all while earning an income. I have a career path which excites and drives me and I’m looking forward to my future."

Michael Todd, Director of the Guernsey store said he is proud to have them both as part of his team.

"Dominic and Archie have both demonstrated the desire and determination to succeed in a career at Specsavers, and we are so pleased they are with us.

"We can offer complete career development from no prior optical experience, to spending a few years working and learning with the potential to become dispensing opticians, contact lens opticians and optometrists, with the same opportunities available in audiology. It is something we are very proud of at Specsavers."
