Energy specialists bring new spark to Guernsey Electricity’s board

Monday 25 January 2021

Two energy industry specialists have joined Guernsey Electricity’s Board as Non-Executive Directors.

With extensive experience in the UK and European energy markets, Professor Ian Chapman and Tania Songini will help the executive management team develop the company’s energy strategy.

Professor Chapman, who was born in Guernsey, is the CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the UK’s largest research and innovation organisation in the energy sector. He leads around 2,000 scientists and engineers in solving some of the most complex problems for developing new sources of low carbon energy.

"As well as being passionate about clean energy, I am also passionate about Guernsey," said Professor Chapman. "It will be a privilege to help the island using the knowledge I have developed over the two decades since leaving. There needs to be fundamental changes in how we produce, use and value energy but I firmly believe Guernsey can be at the forefront of a green evolution."

Miss Songini worked for German engineering multinational company Siemens for 15 years, including five years within its NW Europe Energy business, which focussed on the construction and installation of large scale renewable energy and infrastructure projects. She currently sits on the boards of Thrive Renewables and the Private Development Infrastructure Group so has a comprehensive understanding of sustainable energy technologies and strong governance track record.

"I am looking forward to supporting Guernsey Electricity as the company tackles the many challenges associated with the Island’s energy transition," said Miss Songini. "Operating in a small market, Guernsey Electricity is in a unique position to ensure the right technology, tariffs and infrastructure are in place to meet the island’s future demands."

Guernsey Electricity Chief Executive Alan Bates added: "Ian and Tania are experienced and respected energy professionals whose extensive expertise will make a significant contribution to our energy transition strategic planning.

"As an island, and as a company, we are at a pivotal time as we set out to deliver on the Energy Policy and ensure we pursue the right strategy in a fair and equitable way. They are extremely welcome and valued appointments to the Board and I look forward to working closely with them both."
