Deloitte bringing flipping good talk to Guernsey

Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) will discuss the risk and opportunities within the ocean economy at a fringe event for the upcoming Sustainable Finance Week.

Deloitte is bringing the organisation to Guernsey after joining forces with it two years ago as its global climate charity partner, providing pro bono, volunteer, and financial support.

WDC has recently penned a report into the value of the ocean to economy and businesses, casting reflections on food, retail, tourism, shipping, and financial services.

Deloitte Economic Advisory Partner and Ocean Ambassadors report author, Andy Tong and Chris Butler Stroud, CEO of WDC, will discuss the key findings exploring the business case for acting now to protect marine environments and species at the La Vallette Bathing Pools on 19 September from 08:00 to 09:30.

It comes as new international obligations for disclosing nature-related transactions are imminent, with the report said to be important to firms working towards net zero targets.

Also on the panel is Alex Herschel, Chief Sustainability Officer for Island Energy Group, a chartered environmental specialist who sits on multiple local green forums and bodies.

The event has been curated by Jo Huxtable and Claire Galineau of Deloitte

Mr Tong said dolphins and other marine species are not always factored into commercial activities or the prices we pay for goods and services.

“A significant proportion of what we consume as a society makes use of the ocean, directly or indirectly. The impact of this activity, which gives rise to biodiversity loss and climate change, means we are now at a point where our oceanic ecosystems are under significant threat,” he added.

“Risks and opportunities emerge for businesses and providers of financial capital – changing behaviours along with investment into marine ecosystems will be key. We can also benefit from harnessing technology to collect more and better data to better understand impact and act accordingly.”

The event is free to attend, and sign-up can be done online.
