GROW to benefit from marathon run donations

Monday 25 March 2024

A local man will run the Brighton Marathon to raise cash for GROW Ltd, one of Deloitte’s chosen charities, with the funding target of £2,000 already broken.

John Clacy is the head of Deloitte UK’s Financial Services Portfolio Audit and is taking on the third largest marathon in the mainland winding 26.2 miles from Preston Pack and around into Hove on Sunday 7 April.

Deloitte in Guernsey supports GROW as part of its Five Million Futures charity partnership, an initiative which aims to help five million people overcome barriers to education and employment.

At the time of writing he has already garnered donations of over £2,300.

Mr Clacy said he used to be a seasoned long-distance runner, but a “nasty” injury saw him slow down two decades ago.

But a hip replacement five years ago saw him take to trying laps in his garden again, which he said was a challenge. That was a year ago, and now he plans to undertake “the hardest physical challenge” yet.

As I am a relatively goal-driven person, I decided to boost my determination to run again; I'd target a goal – and this was the Brighton Marathon. I am following (ish) a couch-to-marathon plan. I was over the moon when Deloitte in Guernsey chose GROW as our Five Million Futures charity partner.

So, when I decided to run a marathon this year, there was only one charity I could run for. I have secured matched funding from Deloitte, so for every pound donated, two will go to GROW.

GROW was set up in 1984 to support adults with learning disabilities and difficulties in developing self-confidence and life skills by providing occupational training and mentoring in a safe and stimulating environment.

Mr Clacy has history with GROW. He worked with his father on planting and building jobs, including at an old garden centre with crew members.

Marguerite Talmage, Director at Grow, added: John and the whole Deloitte Guernsey team are much appreciated supporters. We benefit in a variety of ways including learning from their professional expertise and their sponsorship of our Christmas trees.

By running this marathon for Grow John is setting an inspirational example to our Crew, demonstrating what can be achieved with willpower and determination. We shall be with him in spirit every step of the way.
