American Golf pulls out of Guernsey

Wednesday 17 October 2018

The American Golf shop at La Grande Mare has closed after the company chose 20 to shut nationally as part of an investor buyout deal.

The firm, which was Europe's largest golf retailer collapsed into administration last week, with the twenty stores all closing on Friday afternoon, including the one in Guernsey.

The chain was saved in an investor buy out which safeguarded around 900 jobs, but that didn't stop the 20 stores earmarked for closure from shutting for good as deals were done to stop the firm going into liquidation.

The investor Endless bought American Golf as it was put into administration on Friday, in a deal coordinated by Deloitte. That agreement meant 112 of the chain's 132 stores in the UK, Ireland and Guernsey have remained open.

American Golf previously employed more than 1,000 people, including six working at the local franchise. While more than 900 jobs are said to have been saved by the buyout deal, it's not yet clear what will come of the six full and part time roles in Guernsey.

The owners of La Grande Mare Golf Club confirmed in a statement that, "American Golf was put into administration on Friday and then immediately sold to buyout investor Endless.

"As a result of this acquisition, American Golf will no longer be trading in Guernsey."

"We have been informed that the new business will honour valid gift cards and outstanding customer orders, including repairs."

La Grande Mare Golf Club said any customers with outstanding orders can retrieve them from the Pro Shop in the form of a gift card which can then be redeemed online as the business will continue to trade elsewhere.

Customers that have recently placed orders will be contacted by American Golf with confirmation and the dispatch details of that order from the UK.

The shop at La Grande Mare Golf Club itself is not staying closed though, with the management moving quickly to ensure customers can buy the goods they need.

"The Pro Shop has been re-stocked under PGA professional John Dent’s direction – the sale is now on!"

La Grande Mare's resident golf pro John Dent is available through the club and shop and can be contacted there.
