Empowering the future: Julius Baer launches bursary scheme

Julius Baer, the Swiss private bank based at Admiral Park, has launched an exciting bursary scheme aimed at empowering talented and deserving students, designed to support them during their time at university. Karen Martin, Head of HR at Julius Baer, explains why they have launched this scheme now and how important it is to support Guernsey’s young people.

Benefits and support

Education is the key to unlocking potential and driving progress, which is why we’ve developed this robust bursary scheme to support students that are heading off to university.

The student selected for the bursary will receive £2,500 per year of the course to help fund tuition fees, materials and expenses. The scheme also includes a minimum of six weeks of paid work during university holidays where they will gain valuable industry exposure and practical experience.

We’ll provide them with a buddy to mentor them while they are with us; who will support them and help them understand a bit more about the finance industry, showing the different areas within the industry, such as investments, relationship management, administration, accountancy and human resources. If you’ve never worked in finance, you may not know the variety of jobs that can be done!

Application and selection process

The bursary scheme is open to students who are heading to university in September. We are accepting applications from any students, regardless of the degree course they are doing, though those who are studying an economics or financially focussed course could be given preference. Students who are already part way through their degree can also apply for the bursary.

The application process for the bursary scheme is simple. Any students who want to apply should email me at Karen.martin@juliusbaer.com for an application form, which needs to be filled out and retuned with a cover letter by Monday 31 July.

We will then review the applications and create a shortlist, with interviews happening in August, and the successful applicant will be told by the end of August before they start university.

Unlocking the potential

Young people are vital for the future of the finance industry, and Julius Baer, and we felt launching this programme was one way that we could invest in young people for the future.

We have previously encouraged work experience, internships and management shadowing schemes with students and thought it was time we launched our own bursary, designed to provide financial assistance to any students heading off to university in September.

Future and growth

With the launch of the bursary scheme, we aspire to make a lasting impact on the lives of students and the financial industry in Guernsey as a whole. By supporting talented individuals, we aim to create a more inclusive and diverse talent pool, allowing them to experience what it’s like to work in finance, and an office! Whether that environment suits them, whether finance is a career for them.

The people who do the best in their careers are those that are passionate and enjoy what they do. The bursary scheme enables people to see if this is a career they may want to pursue in future.

Our goal would be to select someone who may want to return to the island and work in the financial sector or is interested in a career with Bank Julius Baer. We’re proud of the way that we develop our talent, and the bursary is a new way of providing pathways to greater success with Julius Baer.
