Online detectives are questioning the validity of the goal that denied Guernsey FC a rare away win.
With the Green Lions 3-2 up and 94 minutes on the clock, Metropolitan Police’s Kynan Kirlew-Wright volley from the edge of the box was given by the referee amid protests from the visitors that it had sailed wide.
Goalkeeper Josh Addison had to walk around the back of the goal to get the ball after it bounced off a fence, but the referee said it had gone through a small hole in the side of the net.
TV footage was not conclusive, but pictures from a fan behind the goal has only added to the debate.
The X account Molesey Sports Fan posted: “bit surprised no one is talking about how the last goal simply wasn't a goal! Ball didnt go in net. Ref said it went through this gap in net - for which the angles don't make sense. Would have to hit it perpendicular. It was parallel to tjis bit of netting. I was behind the goal” adding “Also, the gap in the netting simply wasn't big enough. I've never seen anything like this before.”
Sam Murray put GFC in a commanding position just after the break after Owen Wallbridge and Ross Allen had cancelled out Archie Lowery's opener.
But a penalty from Mason Galloway and the controversial last-ditch effort from Kirlew-Wright meant Guernsey's wait for a second win of the season will stretch into November.
