Volleyball Inter-Insular preview: Guernsey and Jersey get ready

Thursday 21 March 2024

Guernsey and Jersey will face off over a series of volleyball matches at Beau Sejour from Friday [22 March].

The Sarnian senior teams are in a confident mood based on their performances in Hampshire this season, but they know Jersey have also stepped up the level they are competing at.

The Men's A Team open proceedings on Friday night at 18:30.

"We're really excited for another match versus Jersey," said captain Robbie Le Messurier.

Guernsey have dominated the last two Inter-Insulars, winning both without dropping a set.

"We've got a strong team of talented players who love playing together.

"We have been undefeated for seasons in Hampshire so we know that we play a good level of volleyball.

"Jersey have been playing in the Hampshire league this season so we expect them to be more match ready."

The Men's B Team play at noon on Saturday.

"Inters is one of the biggest games we have each year and due to the rivalry with Jersey we don't look to achieve anything but a win," said Captain Ashley Gordon.

"I expect Jersey will have stepped up this year with them introducing themselves to the Hampshire Grand Prix scene so it should be interesting what level of game they turn up with."

The Ladies A Team take to the court immediately after at 13:30.

"The Inter-Insular games are a highlight of the volleyball calendar; everyone looks forward to them and it's a chance to represent your island," said Captain Jen Lindfield.

"Although there is a lot of rivalry on court, we are friends off court and love the chance to have bragging rights after winning.

"The Ladies A team have been working hard in the run up to Inters, with a massive success at Hampshire league, which has given the Ladies a great boost in confidence and we look forward to dominating the court on Saturday and taking back the trophy."

The Ladies B team play at 10:30 on Saturday.

"Our Guernsey Ladies B team is buzzing with excitement as we gear up to face off against the Jersey B team," said Captain Tori Toumazi.

"After our rigorous training sessions, we're primed and ready for the challenge. Last year's victory adds fuel to our determination; we're not just playing for a win but to defend our title with pride. This match isn't just about competition, though; it's about camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the pride of representing our island. We have a strong team and every member of the team is prepared to give their all on the court."

The Juniors Mixed will open up the schedule on Saturday at 09:00.

Coach Le Messurier said: "I can't wait for the Juniors match on Saturday. Our youngsters are a great bunch. They can't get enough of volleyball. They would play every day if they could and are always looking to improve. They're capable of a high level of volleyball and I can't wait to coach them at the weekend."
