Trebert disappointed with badminton silver, but sets sights on Orkney

Friday 14 July 2023

Guernsey’s Jordan Trebert has come second in the men’s badminton singles final following an excruciatingly close three rounds.

He played Greenland’s Jens Nielsen after the pair battled through the rounds, each taking down Faroe Island opponents in the semis.

Trebert had a strong start winning the first round 21-15 before top-seed Neilsen won a much tighter second round 22-20, demanding a decider round.

That round went on even longer with the victor needing two points clear to gain gold after both topped 20 points. Neilsen came out victorious on 25-23.

Trebert summed up the final in one word: “Disappointing.

“It was, like you said, a really tight game. I was expecting it to be because I've always had tight matches against him.

Coming close to the end I was up and, I think if I'm being brutally honest, it was mine to give up, but that's just how it goes sometimes.”

He did achieve something he set out to do from the off, though.

“My goal when I came in was to get double figures in medals, so I needed three, and I've achieved that. But maybe I’d have liked something shinier,” Trebert said.

He won a bronze with Guernsey in the badminton team event and picked up another bronze in the men’s doubles with partner Stuart Hardy.

Bronzes in the men’s singles finals went to Magnus Dal-Christiansen and Jónas Djurhuus, both from the Faroes.

Guernsey won six medals in badminton throughout the Games overall; as well as those mentioned above, Hardy and Chloe Le Tissier won bronze in the mixed doubles, Le Tissier came third again in the women’s doubles with Elena Johnson, and Emily Trebert picked up a bronze in the women’s singles.

Jordan Trebert is now looking to the future and hopes to improve his game through a move off-island.

I'm moving over to England which will give me some new training opportunities, some new competition as well.

Hopefully it'll give me some fresh ideas to come back at Orkney.”
