Spectacular classic yachts race to St Peter Port

Friday 19 July 2024

Around 70 classic sailing yachts will race to and from Guernsey this weekend.

The Classic Channel Regatta aims to “revive the spirit of an earlier age of sailing and racing” by bringing together yachts that were designed and built more than 50 years ago.

The regatta got underway in Dartmouth on Wednesday.

Crew members will begin their journey from Dartmouth to St Peter Port on Saturday 20th July and are expected to arrive between 8am and 11am on Sunday morning.

The crew will spend Sunday in the island, with a special prize giving event taking place at Castle Cornet in the evening.

On Monday morning, competitors will set sail on the next stage from St Peter Port to Port de Paimpol in Brittany.

Guernsey Ports Marina Manager Steve Lowe said: “The Classic Channel Regatta brings some spectacular, traditional sailing yachts to Guernsey. We’re expecting another exceptionally busy weekend, with Victoria Marina and the Swan Pontoons set to be full, and hundreds of crew members coming ashore.”

The organisers of the Classic Channel Regatta describe the event as: “A uniquely enjoyable week-long international event bringing together a wonderful gathering of classic boats and their crews from Britain, France and further afield.

“The regatta is centred on three of the finest historic ports in the English Channel, each providing a beautiful backdrop with its own distinctive ambiance.”
