Running goes through the generations at the Healthcare Group Masters Mile

Tuesday 11 June 2024

The second round of the Healthcare Group Masters Mile Series returned to the “royal” grounds of Beau Sejour bathed in the summer sun.

Aimed at providing a platform for people over 50 to stay active, the series has attracted walkers, joggers and runners, with the oldest being in their mid-80s.

The first two events in the free series have taken place on what has been dubbed the “Royal Mile” due to it passing landmarks with royal connections.

This round was also complemented with support from Guernsey Athletics’ juniors, who went from cheering on the masters to completing the course themselves.

The leading woman was Vicki Joyce (F50-54) in 7:14, repeating her win from last time out, followed by Alison Gavey (F55-59) in 8:14.

The Junior Mile

Guernsey Athletics club works hard at inclusiveness and that was reflected in the support that the juniors showed in supporting the older runners, enthusiastically cheering everyone taking part in the Masters Mile.

A quality Junior Mile saw fourteen athletes finish in under eight minutes, quite an achievement on a technical course.

It was a bit of a family affair as three sets of siblings were running.

That was reflected in the top three finishers as brothers Max and Alfie Roger battled it out. Max came through under 6 minutes, closely followed by Alfie and then Grace King.

Dan Jamieson and Shay Le Poidevin had a great race and Dan held on to come through in under 6 minutes 30 minutes.

The split times showed that the training group are learning the important skill of pacing their runs consistently.

The mile events were followed by a screening of Chariots of Fire in the Beau Sejour cinema.

The film covers the 1924 Olympics in Paris where the Olympics is being held again 100 years later this summer.
