Royal visit ahead of small ships race

Tuesday 13 August 2024

Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Edinburgh, returned to Guernsey yesterday [12 August] two years after her last visit.

She was last in the island in 2022 when she was the Countess of Wessex. She became Duchess in 2023.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, came to the island in the run up to the Association of Sail Training Organisations Guernsey to Poole Small Ships Race.

The race will begin this afternoon and involves 140 young people across 12 boats. The Duchess is a Royal Patron of the organisation and met with the young people taking part.

"This race was inspired by the RNLI's 200th Anniversary with the aim of raising awareness of the impact on, and value to, young people of Sail Training and adventure afloat generally," said Chief Executive of the Association, Kerry McMillan.

"We know that Guernsey provided crews for Sail Training passages like this one in the past, and we’re very much hoping to reignite that relationship with the Bailiwick and its young people."

The fleet of ships arrived in Guernsey over the weekend for the race which has been inspired by the RNLI’s 200th anniversary.

“We are excited to return to Guernsey – it’s the first time since the 2007 ASTO Torquay – Guernsey Small Ships Race! Sail Training is so much more than just learning to sail - it instils qualities that can make a real difference to everyday life, such as confidence, teamworking, communication, resilience, adaptability and responsibility,” continued X.

“The race provides the perfect opportunity to re-establish the connection between Guernsey’s young people and offshore sail training organisations, working together to broaden the horizons of young people.”

The race is scheduled to begin at 14:30 and the first yachts should’ve completed the race by Thursday morning.
