PHD opportunity to study impact of Island Games in Orkney

Thursday 07 September 2023

A study will look at the impact of the next Island Games in Orkney.

Robert Gordon University will be funding a three year PHD studentship on the island and have now invited applications for it.

Orkney will host the Games in 2025 following the success of the Guernsey event in July.

It will bring together competitors from more than 20 islands to compete across 13 sports.

The overall aim of the PhD will be to investigate the impact of the Games on local communities and businesses; visitors and spectators; participants; volunteers and the environment.

It will look to profile who watches and takes part in the event, how long they stay for and how much money is spent in Orkney as a result.

The project will also examine perceptions about the island and its facilities, investigate how the Games are represented on social media and how they impact the economy and local communities.

Transport and venues will be the focus of uncovering the environmental impacts.

The person chosen will work alongside the Games organising committee.
