Malaysia has turned down an offer to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
It throws further doubt on the event, often the pinnacle competition for the Channel Islands top sports people, which is struggling to find a host after Australian state Victoria withdrew over escalating costs.
The Commonwealth Games Federation has offered around £100m. towards the hosting costs.
Malaysia's sport ministry said the offer would not cover the overall costs of hosting a large-scale sports event.
"Additionally, the economic impact could not be identified in this short timeframe."
It has been reported that three other countries have expressed an interest, with one of those Singapore.
Other options include delaying until 2027, while Commonwealth Games Australia has floated the idea of co-hosting the next Games.
Keeping costs down by using existing venues and infrastructure could help find a solution too.
Birmingham had to step in to host the 2022 Games after Durban was stripped of the hosting rights amid financial problems.
There is no host in place for the 2030 Games after Alberta withdrew its bid.
