Guernsey’s leading athletes face a wait to find out which sports will be included in a scaled back Commonwealth Games.
Only athletics and swimming have the guarantee of being locked in for the Commonwealth Games in 2026.
Glasgow has stepped in to host the Games after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out, but it will be in a streamlined format, with fewer sports than had been envisaged originally and using existing facilities.
It is expected that 10 sports will be catered for, half the number that were in Birmingham 2022.
“We are very happy and pleased that a Games will take place following the withdrawal of the State of Victoria, Australia last year to host the Games,” said Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association chairman Angela Stuart.
“We look forward to working with both Scotland and the Federation for a Games in 2026. Glasgow last hosted a very successful Games in 2014 and although the 2026 Games is likely to be with a reduced number of sports and athletes, we support Scotland wholeheartedly in the positive support to all Commonwealth Games Associations to provide a Games in less than two years’ time.
“At the present time the final processes and agreements are in progress between Scotland and the Federation, therefore until such time as we receive confirmation of the finer details we are not in a position to advise of any further details.
“We look forward to hearing from the Federation in respect of the Games dates, which sports are to be included, and also the number of athletes that Team Guernsey will be able to support at the Games. When this information is received we will meet with our Member Sports to discuss and agree the process to be undertaken to support the selection of athletes to represent Guernsey at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.”
Cricket, weightlifting, the marathon and road cycling events are some of those believed to be facing the axe.
