Maya Le Tissier watched on as any hope of playing in the Olympics with Team GB evaporated in heartbreaking style last night.
She was on the bench as England put six goals past Scotland without a reply in the Nations League, but when the Netherlands scored a fourth against Belgium deep in added time they secured top spot in the group and with it ended the home nations’ hopes of playing in Paris.
Only the top two European sides from the Nations League, and France as hosts, will make the Olympics in the summer.
It was a night when the top spot in the group swung back and forth between the Lionesses and the Dutch, England put in this position after some disappointing losses earlier in the group stages.
Lucy Bronze’s header for England’s sixth goal looked to have been enough at the final whistle, but Holland were still playing and Damaris Egurrola scored in the 95th-minute to secure the group on goal difference.
“We were waiting for some long minutes, and we really thought we got it, and then we didn’t make it,” the manager Sarina Wiegman said.
“I said I didn’t know what to say. All I could say was I’m really proud of our performance and what we did this whole week. But it’s not enough and it’s really, really disappointing.”
Le Tissier’s Manchester United side are back in action on Sunday against Tottenham at 18:45.
They currently sit fourth in the Women’s Super League.
