Le Tissier makes an impression as England cruise to victory

Monday 26 February 2024

Maya Le Tissier made another claim to be part of the England Lionesses future as she marked her third cap with an assist and a solid display against Austria.

She was part of a crop of younger players turning out for England in a 7-2 win in Algeciras, Spain.

England ended last year by failing to qualify for the Nations League semi-finals and the players also missed the chance of playing for Great Britain in the Olympics as a result.

Le Tissier, 21, was one of seven players aged 24 or younger who played in the opening fixture of 2024.

“There is a lot of potential in this team,” Sarina Wiegman, the England head coach, said. “If you look at the team that started, that’s a pretty young team and they are really good.

“There is a bright future and even more younger players are coming in but the more experienced players with more caps are doing really well too. So having even more choices over who to start or have in the squad is a luxury as a coach.”

Le Tissier played at right back, with her through pass in injury time setting up Rachel Daly for the final goal.

Earlier in the second half she had a powerful header saved.

“It was a great night, lots of goals, our fans obviously got to see lots of goals as well, so all in all, very good,” said Le Tissier after the match.

Austria were poor and Wiegman believed her side could have scored more.

England went in 3-1 up at half time after goals from Alessia Russo, Grace Clinton and Beth Mead.

Russo and Mead both went on to score again, with Jess Carter and Daly also on target.

Virginia Kirchberger scored a brace for Austria.

England play Italy tomorrow.
