Indoor bowls: Jersey regain inter-insular, Guernsey pick up majority of CI titles

Thursday 11 April 2024

Jersey have regained the indoor bowls inter-insular.

But there was success along the way for the Guernsey side, picking up the Channel Island titles in the Veterans Singles through Gary Pitschou, the Mixed Pairs thanks to Ali and Ian Merrien, the Open Triples courtesy of Shaun Bichard, Brad Le Noury and Jason Greenslade and the Open Pairs Jason Greenslade and Rose Ogier.

The Jersey Bowls Stadium at Grainville played host to the weekend, with Jersey selector and player Lee Nixon "delighted" with his team's performance.

"Losing to Guernsey last year really stung," he told the Jersey Evening Post.

"We made a real conscious effort this year to make sure we picked as strong a team as possible to try and regain the crown and everyone stepped up to the occasion brilliantly."

Josh Bonsall, Guernsey Indoor Bowling Association Director and Recorder said: "We always enjoy travelling across to Jersey and had a great weekend that was superbly hosted by the Jersey Indoor Bowling Association.

"The weekend also provided some very valuable time on the green for our three entrants into the World Bowls Indoor Championships which are being hosted in Guernsey in just over a week's time. Jersey certainly had the upper hand in the inter-insular but we were pleased with the number of Channel Island Finals wins we were able to achieve."

The women's pairing of Gaynor Thomas and Diane Canavan were the first Caesarean team to put points on the board on the opening day, with a narrow 24-21 win over Sarnian counterparts Catherine Bonsall and Jill Froome. The pair repeated the trick in the afternoon, defeating Ali Merrien and Michele De Carteret 20-10.

The Caesarean trio of Malcolm de Sousa, Luke Le Sueur and Gus Hodgetts were responsible for the biggest score of the weekend, as they swept aside Ian Merrien, Josh Bonsall and Alan Merrien with a 32-11 win.

Guernsey took three out of four Channel Island finals on offer on the opening day.

In the Veteran Singles, Pitschou beat Renouf  21-14, the Mixed Pairs saw Ali and Ian Merrien victorous against De Sousa and Hutchings 20-12 while the
Open Triples contest was a win for Greenslade, Le Noury and Bichard against Nixon, Hutchings and Davis 19-17.

In the inter-insular, Jersey had a 6-2 overall advantage at the end of the first day.

The closing day was largely one-way traffic for the hosts in the inter-insular, winning four of their six matches, including a 26-13 win by the women's doubles pair Katie Nixon and Babs Kittleson over Bonsall and Froome.

In the end, Jersey's ladies won 10-6 and the men 13-3.

In the knockout open pairs, Greenslade and Ogier beat Lowery and McConnell 21-6.

Making the most of Caesarean home advantage in the U35 singles event, as Malcolm de Sousa took the individual accolade by beating Shaun Bichard 21-7.

"The standard of bowls in the Channel Islands is clearly extremely high and is showing no signs of letting up," said Nixon.

"The whole weekend was contested in wonderful spirits and there was a large crowd of supporters watching the whole time which was brilliant to see.

"We'd like to extend a massive thank you to Guernsey for a great contest and an excellent weekend."
