"I'm all good"

Wednesday 07 August 2024

Alastair Chalmers has thanked his supporters after his Olympic journey ended in Paris tonight with a semi final appearance in the mens' 400m hurdles.

The Guernseyman was in for a tough race from the start and he appeared to give the event his all, before crashing into the 7th hurdle and falling to the ground.

He has won praise from fans for getting up to continue the race even though his competitors were all well ahead of him after his fall.

Speaking in an Instagram story posted to his personal account a couple of hours after his semi-final he said he was "fine".

"I just wanted to come on here and let you know I'm all good," he said.

"Thank you to everyone who's reached out. It's all fine, I'm so proud of how far I've come and where I'm at," he said, with the Stade de France in the background as he filmed himself in selfie mode.

"I just got caught up racing these guys, and absolutely hit it to hurdle five and six," he continued.

"That's how it goes but I'm glad I got myself up and finished so thank you to everyone for the support. It's been a massive journey and an amazing ride. I'll see you soon!"

Chalmers is being supported in Paris by his family, girlfriend, members of his coaching team, representatives of Guerney Athletics, and other local sports fans.

Guernsey Athletics led the consolation and praise for him immediately after his semi-final heartbreak this evening saying "he was right in the mix and looking better than ever".

Jorgen Petterson was among those commenting.

As the former President of the International Island Games Association he has seen Chalmers, his brother Cameron, and other athletes from Guernsey and the other nations of the IIGA family compete over the years.

"Fantastic performance to make it to Paris, small margins and bad luck today," he wrote. "Thanks for being a true inspiration and ambassador for Guernsey and islanders in the family of International Island Games Association (IIGA)! You are a true hero."
