Guernsey’s table tennis players came up against some of the best in their age group at an exciting British Primary Schools International tournament.
A team of eight from the island travelled to Jersey for the event at Fort Regent, which also attracted players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
“The value of this tournament is massive for our young up and coming table tennis players, they get the opportunity to compete against strong opposition from the larger nations who compete in high level competitions each week,” said Development Officer, Becks O'Keefe.
“Our players gain a lot of confidence from these events and we hope it inspires them to want more competition in the future.”
She said that some of the Guernsey results did not reflect on how well the players performed.
Two of the boys, Aiden Ozanne and Luke Evans, qualified through the group stages beating players from Ireland, Jersey and Wales.
Aiden went on to beat the Ireland number 1 in the first round, narrowly losing in the quarter final to the eventual winner, England number 1 Zaid Aldilimi, 1 - 3.
Luke went out in the first round to the England number 2, 0- 3.
In the girls competition, Keira Eldridge lost in the semi-final of the plate event and so secured a bronze medal.
The best result in the team event saw Guernsey’s boys beating Jersey 7-3.
They lost 4-6 to Ireland.
The girls were defeated by Jersey (0-10), who went on to win bronze, and Ireland (4-6).
