Guernsey storm to padel Inter-Insular win

Tuesday 17 October 2023

Guernsey led the whole way as they regained the Inter-Insular padel title in style.

They lifted The Corcuera Cup after a decisive 30-20 win.

The competition was fought out over 50 matches in four categories: Men’s and Ladies’ Open and Men’s and Ladies’ Vets.

The Guernsey Ladies’ Team put in an outstanding performance winning both their trophies.

The Ladies Open team secured an 8-1 victory.

The pairings of Lauren Barker and Lauren Watson-Steele and aunt and niece Chantelle and Chloe De La Mare won all three of their matches.

The “Laurens” are both unbeaten in Inter-Insular matches, with Barker picking up a hatrick of clean sweeps since the inception of the event in 2021.

Early on Sunday morning, Helen Polli and Jo Robinson won their match against Claire Jubb and Lindy Lawrenson, to bag the second trophy of the weekend for the Ladies’ Vets and at the same time winning the 26th point overall to secure The Corcuera Cup for the home side.

On the Men’s side things were tighter, with both events coming down to the final matches. In the Men’s Vets, Guernsey’s Mauro Becker had to retire with a calf injury, handing the final point to Jersey and leaving the score at 8-8. After winning last year, the trophy was retained by Jersey.

In the Men’s Open, Olly Cull and Patrick Ogier needed to beat Jersey’s Aaron Higgins and Tom Middleton to claim the title for Guernsey. After going 2-5 down in the first set, they came back strongly to win 7-5, 6-2 to secure the trophy 9-8.
