Guernsey FC suffer last minute heartbreak

Thursday 10 October 2024

Visitors Binfield struck with virtually the last kick of the game at Footes Lane to leave Guernsey FC rueing another lost opportunity.

It is early in the Isthmian South Central season, but Binfield are a side the Green Lions would have wanted to take points off of given how close they are in the table.

GFC were behind early after Jamie Hilton picked up the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and struck it underneath Josh Addison.

Just five minutes were on the clock.

The Green Lions chance came with 10 minutes of the first half to go.

Ross Allen was attempting to pick up a rebound from his own shot when he went down in the box and the ref pointed to the spot.

He stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it into the bottom right corner.

GFC had built some control in the game and that continued in the second half as they created the best opportunities of the two sides but failed to capitalize fully on any of them.

It was a familiar tale and then the inevitable happened in the fifth minute of injury time.

Substitute Ethan Gold struck a half-volley beyond Addison sparking wild celebrations.

It was GFC’s fifth consecutive home loss, equalling their worst ever spell of results.

They are second from bottom in the league and travel to play Rayners Lane on Saturday.
