Festive round-up: GFC out of the relegation zone and Scott makes his mark

Wednesday 27 December 2023

Guernsey FC picked up their first away win of the season in their 500th competitive match.

They turned around a 1-0 half time deficit at bottom club Binfield, who remain winless this season.

Binfield had changed head coaches in the week of the game, and after surviving some early pressure took the lead through debutant  Ethan Lindo in the 20th minute.

GFC had their chances in the first half, but had to wait until five minutes into the second period to convert.

Dave Rihoy was on target for his 80th league goal and first since April 2019.

The winner came on 84 minutes, when young Jack Griffin turned in a Ross Allen cross from close range.

Coach Jordan Kelly was called into action in goal, and the result meant he picked up his first win in a Guernsey FC shirt at the 13th time of asking.

The Green Lions moved up to 19th and round out this year with a home game against Sutton Common Rovers at 1.30pm on Saturday.

Scott pushes for starting spot

Alex Scott made his first Bournemouth appearance for almost two months in a 3-2 away win at Fulham.

Scott came off the bench to replace Lewis Cook in the first half.

He was harshly booked a minute later, made a mistake which led to Forest opener, before then setting up Justin Kluivert’s goal with a driving run from the half way line.

Head coach Andoni Iraloa subbed him and Antoine Semenyo off with 20 minutes to go because of the bookings they had picked up.

Scott spoke to BBC’s Match of the Day about his assist.

“I got the ball and it was around the halfway line. It kept opening up for me, I was getting closer to goal and my shooting is not the best so I thought to lay if off to the better finishers, so luckily Justin scored,” said Scott.

“I’m not going to be shooting from ridiculous angles and Justin is a much better finisher than me so I was always going to lay the ball off."

Scott is keen to prove he is ready to be back in the starting 11.

“Hopefully I played my part and played quite well and hopefully can start against Tottenham."

He was also full of praise for Iraola.

“A lot of what we do in training is huge. The confidence - he gives that to every player. The way he speaks to us, the way he has us training after games. The confidence throughout the team comes from the top. He is a top manager."
