17 medals for Guernsey's swimmers, so far

Tuesday 11 July 2023

By the end of day two at the NatWest International Island Games, the hosts had won 17 medals for swimming alone, with more expected over the coming three days.

When Beau Sejour's pool closed at the end of Tuesday's events, Guernsey had won 7 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze over the previous two days.

Among the medal winners on day two of the swimming competitions were Ronny Hallett, Charlie-Joe Hallett, Tom Hollingsworth, Oriana Wheeler, Laura Le Cras, Tatiana Tostevin, Orla Rabey and Molly Staples. They all also won medals yesterday.

The Hallett brothers secured gold and silver between them again in another race, having last night come first and second in the 100m breaststroke. Ronny and Charlie-Joe swapped positions for the 50m breaststroke tonight.

Older brother Charlie-Joe said he was determined to beat his younger brother but they knew they wanted to secure both medals between them.

"It felt good, I had to get some payback tonight," said Charlie-Joe. "It was all about coming 1, 2 in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke. We're both over the moon with it to be honest."

Charlie-Joe said he knew his younger brother would push him in this week's competitions.

"I was more happy for him really. He's been knocking on the door to beat me for a long time and he finally did it last night and he executed a perfect race. It was hard but it was good to see."

"It was really good but to be honest he's been on top for many years now so it's good to get a bit of payback. I reckon it will get more even now," said Ronny.

Both brothers are due to swim again this week and are hoping for more medals.

The Hallett brothers also won bronze along with Jonathan Beck and Owain Edwards in the men's 4x50m freestyle relay.

The Guernsey women won gold though for their 4x50m medley relay with Hannah Jones, Laura Le Cras, Orla Rabey and Tatiana Tostevin adding to their haul of medals.

Rabey won individual gold in the women's 50m butterfly while Molly Staples claimed silver.

Le Cras won silver in the 50m breaststroke and there was a bronze for Wheeler in 200m individual medley.

All the women are swimming again this week. The youngest of them, Staples said she is loving the home Games experience.

"It's incredible, it's an experience that you can't describe. At a home Games, that whole crowd, all my friends from school, my family, they're all in there. Honestly, it's so loud."
