The revised Liberation Day plans

Thursday 07 May 2020

Deputy Matt Fallaize has written a letter to every household in Guernsey with details of the plans for Liberation Day under lockdown.

His letter was sent out with one from the Bailiff, which has been posted to every home in the island this week.

The President of Education, Sport and Culture wrote that he hopes everyone will be able to "celebrate and commemorate the Liberation".

Dear Fellow Islander,

My Committee is responsible for organising the celebrations and commemorations of our Island's Liberation from the Occupation of 1940-45. As the Bailiff's letter explains, in this special year of the 75th anniversary we were looking forward to hosting public events with would have been bigger ad better than ever. The current pandemic required us to rethink our plans short notice.

I am grateful to officers of our Committee and volunteers who have worked hard to compile an alternative programme of events for May 9th and in the week leading up to that special day. This programme has been designed to encourage us all to mark the Liberation in our homes. I hope everyone will find at least something in the programme which allows them to celebrate and commemorate the Liberation.

We are presenting this programme in the spirit of 'Guernsey Together' which helped pull our island through the dark years of Occupation and which has special meaning for us again now in the very different but challenging circumstances of today.

I wish you and your family good health.

Yours sincerely,

Matt Fallaize

President, Committee for Education Sport and Culture

Liberation 75
