LETTER: "If the States deliver a clear plan, the construction industry will deliver that plan"

Friday 20 October 2023

The Guernsey Building Trades Employers Association has laid down the gauntlet, challenging the States to deliver a clean plan for infrastructure in the island.

The following statement was sent to all deputies this morning as they continued debating amendments to the States' Funding and Investment Plan:

"During this week’s States debate on the Funding & Investment Plan there were questions raised about the local construction industry’s ability to deliver two major building projects at the same time, whilst also delivering vital additional housing,

The local construction industry has a proud history of stepping up to the plate and delivering major projects on time. Numbers employed in the industry have always fluctuated to meet changing demand.

Ten years ago, there were approximately 3300 people employed in construction, five years later that fell to below 2800 but has since climbed back to nearly 3000, showing the industry can adapt.

It is the failure of successive States assemblies in delivering a coherent strategy on investment in infrastructure that has resulted in the capacity of the construction industry reducing.

If the States can deliver a clear plan, then the local construction industry will invest in people, training, and equipment to deliver that plan."
