5 things I LOVE about Guernsey

Friday 22 May 2020

Pete Turner moved to the island to take up a senior position at a local bank - and has been struck by Guernsey's beauty, the friendliness of the people here, and the food, so he put 'pen to paper' to tell us the five things he loves about living here.

Originally from Sussex, Pete grew up in Dubai and has lived in Guernsey since October 2019, which is his first role “overseas” – or at least, not in the UK! He is partnered to David, who also works for the HSBC.

Pete has a passion for travel and is loving the ability to explore the Islands, as well as home renovation having previously renovated two period properties from ‘shack to chic’.

So here are his five favourite things about Guernsey-life so far:

The outdoors beauty of the island

Walking the dog on the Islands stunning beaches and exploring new countryside, woods and cliff top paths has been exciting for a new islander like myself to explore – Ben the dog has absolutely loved the beautiful walks and meeting new people.

How friendly everyone is on the island

From buying a house and a car to some eggs in hedge veg – everyone has been so helpful, accommodating and welcoming. I really love the vast array of bespoke and unique businesses that are available on the island, from the family owned and run beach kiosks and coffee shops, to the locally run garden centres, boutique shops and restaurants. It means we can buy and experience local produce and support the local business ventures on the island.

Oh wow, the food!

As someone who loves their steak and seafood, we have been truly blessed with sampling some amazing restaurants across the Islands (and with so many more to go). I am so looking forward to meeting up with friends again to continue this favourite pastime!

How safe the island is

We’ve never once felt unsafe, even at night (there have been many walks down to the beach to watch the night time stars) – we’ve left car windows open, front doors open – and it’s appreciated as the norm. I hope we never take for granted just how beautiful, clean and safe this Island is.

The night time skies

Having lived close to London, I never truly appreciated how beautiful the skies become in darkness. We have truly loved star gazing and watching recent meteor showers.
