Neighbourly concern sparked by door knocking gardeners

Friday 02 February 2024

Concerns have been raised about a potential scam being run by men offering gardening work door to door in Guernsey.

A reader contacted Express to raise her concerns after neighbours were "ripped off" by the men.

She said the men were driving an English registered van and were handing out a leaflet offering work, mainly involving tree care.

"They have been touting houses, knocking on vulnerable peoples' doors and reeling them in," the reader said.

She said that the work carried out is of a poor quality and her neighbours had to have another firm come and do it again.

The men knocking on the door wanted the money to be paid up front, into a personal bank account, and she's heard of other people also falling for it.

Express asked Guernsey Police if there had been any official reports made of concerns over traders hawking door to door, and a spokesperson said previous advice issues still stands.

In the past Guernsey Police have encouraged people to "always be careful of cold callers who offer to make building repairs, tarmac your drive, clean and repair gutters etc.

"Often, they will ask for money in advance, they may even offer to drive you to the bank to withdraw money to pay them.

"Typically they seek to exploit the vulnerable and elderly members of our community and will use tactics such as intimidation and exploitation of the good will of those they target."
