‘A Renaissance of Victor Hugo’, featuring Internationally acclaimed artists Oleg Mikhailov and Daniel Hosego, will be the first exhibition to open within the newly refurbished Mansell Street Gallery in March 2023.

Art for Guernsey and Collas Crill have announced plans to work together to showcase the works of the charity’s most recent artists in residence, marking the beginning of a rolling programme of exhibitions presented in the new facilities.

The charity says that both artists have been tasked with revisiting the legacy of Victor Hugo, specifically his Guernsey-set novel ‘Toilers of the Sea’, to produce museum-quality artworks.

Work is well underway and new artworks are being produced over the coming months, with a few surprises in store and some notable collaborations already in place.

Collas Crill staff will be invited to get involved with the creative process themselves, joining the artists for a workshop ahead of the exhibition opening.

Oleg Mikhailov says he is "obsessed with the sea" - his abiding subject and the source of his dreams and inspiration – calling himself “a water man”. Mr Mikhailov studied painting and printmaking at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he discovered his love of lithography.

Daniel Hosego is considered to be one of the rising stars of the contemporary art scene with his colour-print artworks in particular seen as "very inspiring" by the new generation, according to Art for Guernsey.
