Vale War memorial shines again

Sunday 25 August 2024

Guernsey Memorial Masons and Vaudin Stonemasons have spoken about their work to renovate and restore the Vale War memorial.

The memorial was cleaned of organic matter and dirt, but not mechanically cleaned so the weathered finish was undisturbed.

The rendered perimeter walls and pillars were chemically cleaned and pressure washed to remove the darkened dirt that coated them. The pillars received some minor repairs where the render had deteriorated.

The memorial and steps were re-pointed as the mortar had weathered away.

The main inscription has its existing finish cleaned away and re-gilded in gold leaf and outlined in black enamel.

Facing South, the gilding shines when the sun is out and in the midday sky.

The other inscriptions were cleaned out and re-enamelled in black by the steady hands of Monumental Masons, father and son, Simon and Dan Goodwin.

Archie Carre who assisted during his works experience placement with them.

The stone obelisk is contained in a small raised garden with the names of parishioners who died in the First and Second World Wars with the inscription "Vale War Memorial, 1914-18. Pro Patria" in gold.

The granite pillar is topped with a cross and has a cross and sword carved into its body above a Guernsey crest.

The work was paid for using money from the The Parish Improvement fund

The Vale Parish holds an annual memorial service at the monument in November.
