Tree put up to focus on compassionate, personal care

Thursday 17 January 2019

A model tree has been put up at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital so we can give our thoughts on what compassion means to everyone using health and care services in the Bailiwick.

The "Engagement Tree" is an initiative of HSC's Care Values Framework Vision, which states: "People will be at the centre of care that is responsive to their needs. We will have caring, compassionate, empowered, educated and accountable Care Providers adhering to their professional codes".

This is going to be a way for HSC to get patient feed back and possibility adapt its staff's approach to care to focus on this value.

The Tree has been sponsored by cancer support charity MacMillan, and it will be moved around different locations over the next year so islanders can interact with it. People will be able to write on 'leaves' before placing them on the tree - they will also be asked to think what barriers there are to 'compassion' in care environments.

These will then be gathered and used to inform work being carried out under the Care Values Framework, and in particular looking at identifying and overcoming the barriers to delivering compassionate care to our community.

At the opening of the tree yesterday, Chief Secretary of HSC, Mark De Garis, said: "I am delighted to officially launch the Engagement Tree today, it is one of a number of initiatives HAS are starting about engaging with our service users.

"Focusing on passionate care can really make such a difference to the services we offer, it is a very important part of what we do."

The Engagement Tree will initially be placed in the Gloucester Room canteen at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital before moving on to a new site.

An electronic version of the framework can be found at gov.gg/carevaluesframework.
