Trapped Asian Hornet could lead to more

An Asian Hornet, found in a trap in St Andrew's could hopefully lead to more of the insects being found.

The latest one was found at the weekend at Route Des Fauconnaires, but no nest has been found yet.

Efforts to find the next and more of the insects are continuing though and that work is now being focused broadly in areas where Asian hornets have already been sighted or caught. That includes around Capelles, near the Castel Church, by the Longfrie and along Route Des Fauconnaires.

Anyone who thinks they may have spotted an Asian Hornet or nest should report it immediately by emailing asianhornet@gov.gg or by calling 234567.

Anyone with gardens, sheds or outbuildings should check those areas for nests. A nest could be the size of a tennis ball.

A number of sightings were reported earlier this year and last year, but most sightings reported in 2017 were of the island's own native wildlife so the general public should not kill the insects that they find until they have been inspected.

If you suspect you have found an Asian Hornet you should take a good quality close up photo and email it to asianhornet@gov.gg including with your email:

• the location
• the direction the hornet came from and subsequently flew to
• your name and contact details
