Town gets dressed to impress

Tuesday 26 May 2020

As summer begins and the lockdown restrictions are being eased, St Peter Port is being dressed for the brighter times coming our way with new flower arrangements going up this month.

Three contractors work on the displays with the work to put them up starting last week.

It's a large scale project known as the St Peter Port Parish Floral Big Plan with the States' Parks and Gardens team, Colin Falla Southbrook Nurseries and Queux Plant Centre all working together on behalf of the St Peter Port Douzaine.

The Plan was first agreed about eight years ago after the Douzaine and Floral Guernsey spoke to town Business owners who pay for the bulk of the display costs out of their business rates.

St Peter Port Douzenier Jacquie Robin is the co-ordinator of Floral St Peter Port. She said there are one thousand floral displays within the Big Plan, which the three contractors produce between them. The Plan then has two seasons - 'summer', between May and September, and 'winter', between October and April.

Between them, the contractors also co-ordinate the changeovers and maintain the infrastructure which includes five miles of automatic irrigation that was fitted by them to keep the displays well watered.

Mrs Robin said this year's displays look beautiful and are a welcome sight as we come out of lockdown.

"The Constables and Douzaine of St Peter Port are sure that these floral displays which their business and homeowner rates provide each year are an important part of our town and although tourists will not ee them this year, will do their part in supporting the town’s economy and islander’s wellbeing as we come out of lockdown."

There are also other parish floral displays paid for by the ratepayers and supplied by Colin Falla, Parks & Gardens and the Parish Grounds men.
