The installation of a toucan crossing at the end of Grandes Maison road cost Environment & Infrastructure £64,000 last year.

The project was budgeted to cost £85,000, but Deputy Barry Brehaut, the President of the Committee, told Express that the work had come in under budget. He said he felt people had become used to the new layout, but the States were unable to give any statistics on how often it was used.

The cost of the works were revealed in the States' Accounts for 2018, which were released last week. it was installed because it would reportedly 'improve existing difficulties experienced by people who walk and cycle along the shared path'.

E&I also spent another £87,000 on infrastructure for the Integrated Transport Strategy around Guernsey.

Deputy Brehaut added: "‘The toucan crossing means a safer crossing point, for both pedestrians and cyclists.  If we are to encourage the community to be more active then we have to ensure the infrastructure is there to support that shift.

"More generally, it appears the majority of islanders have now got used to the new layout."
