'Thousands stolen' after six burglaries in one night

Tuesday 30 July 2019

The owners of a fish and chip shop are among the victims as Guernsey Police confirm there have been six burglaries in just one night in a small area of St Peter Port.

All of the six incidents happened overnight between Saturday 27 July and Sunday 28 July, around the junction of Les Amballes, Le Bouet and Pitronnerie Road.

The owners of Beetons Fish and Chip shop and Barista and Bites, which is at the traffic lights at the entrance to Pitronnerie Road Industrial Estate, said they had been targeted but that the thieves had only made off with the £50 cash float as the tills are emptied each night.

There was some damage caused to the property though as the owners said the alleged thief had climbed through a small window to gain access.

Beetons owners said they hope finger prints can be taken from a hammer left at the scene and that CCTV footage from their own security equipment can be used in the police investigation.

Guernsey Police themselves have confirmed that six burglaries were reported over the weekend, in both commercial and residential properties and that "all took place between the junction of Les Amballes and Le Bouet, and Pitronnerie Industrial Estate".

"Thousands of pounds worth of goods and cash were stolen", said the police statement but exact details haven't been released as the investigation continues.

Detective Keiran Walsh is leading the investigation and said that burglaries like this remain rare in Guernsey. Advice has been given to ensure properties are protected against other burglaries happening as "there are a small minority in our community who are looking for an opportunity to commit crimes.

"If we all make it harder for a burglary to be committed, the chances of it happening and you being a victim are vastly reduced," said Detective Walsh.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Guernsey Police on 725111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
