Thousands donated through 'Spektrek' scheme

Wednesday 04 December 2024

More than 10,500 pairs of glasses have been donated to individuals in need across the world, thanks to local involvement in a wider initiative.

The Lions Club of Guernsey takes part in the National Lion's Club 'Spektrek' appeal.

That sees donated glasses given to people who need them.

Last month, members of the Lion's Club of Guernsey packed thousands of pairs of glasses ready to join those shipped from elsewhere.

A spokesperson for the local group said Lions Club members and other volunteers "readied" the glasses for shipment to a UK processing centre, where they are all cleaned and sorted. Then they are forwarded to Médico LCF in Le Harve for final processing before being distributed to underserved communities across the world.

Lions Club of Guernsey President Robert Holder said he was very grateful for all of the support received locally, as they strive to support vision health globally.

“The outpouring of support we’ve seen from Guernsey’s residents has been incredible," he said. "Every pair of glasses donated represents improved vision and quality of life for someone in need.

"We are so grateful to our community for their generosity and to our volunteers who helped make this shipment possible.”

The Lions Club of Guernsey is a chapter of Lions Clubs International, a global service organization dedicated to serving communities and addressing humanitarian needs. The club focuses on a variety of local and global issues, including vision health, disaster relief, and youth development.
