Supersavvysavers share latest cost comparison

Tuesday 03 December 2024

The Channel Island's Coop has come out as the cheapest in the latest supermarket price comparison.

Carried out voluntarily by the women behind the Supersavvysavers website, the comparison shares the costs of staple goods available at each of the island's main supermarkets.

The comparison has been carried out each month since last July, with Marks and Spencers being the cheapest last month, and Alliance for the two months prior to that.

On this occasion, the comparison was carried out on Sunday 1 December with the prices of items available making the Coop the cheapest place to do your weekly food shop.

The women behind Supersavvysavers explained that when carrying out their price comparison they always include the lowest priced item available in store. In some supermarkets that is an 'own-brand product' but in others it will be a named brand.

They also note that there are slight variants in weights of items as each store may offer different pack sizes. They gave the example of a bag of potatoes, which ranges in price from £1.55 to £2.30 currently.

Where it comes to cheese and each store selling it in varying quantities they calculate the price based on 500g by working out the cost per gram of whatever the cheapest cheddar is available.

With the Coop coming out on top as the cheapest this month, the Supersavvysavers did point that the business has recently introduced 'member prices'.

They said they are hopeful the 'member prices' will be their 'everyday' prices, but they've promised to keep a close eye on the Coop's prices as they may need to adjust the current price comparison list if there are regular fluctuations in 'member prices' over the course of this month.
