The States of Guernsey will be subsiding the cost of new school uniforms, as the old Grammar School continues to evolve into Les Varendes High School.
A budget has been assigned within the Transforming Education Programme to subsidise the cost of new uniforms for 457 Les Varendes High School students and 221 incoming La Mare de Carteret High School students.
The subsidy will be provided via a voucher that can be used at Game Changers and Fletcher Sports.
A recent Freedom of Information request has revealed the cost of subsidising 75% of the cost is an estimated £69,000, roughly £100 per student.
The Committee for Education, Sport and Culture said: “A further cost of £3k is associated with the uniform voucher scheme and portal. This cost includes the updating and re-use of an existing web portal (a States of Guernsey owned asset) to meet the requirements of the uniform voucher scheme.”
The core items include a blazer, tie, trousers/skirt, PE top, PE shorts/skirt, and PE socks.
"We are very proud of the efforts of our New School Design Team; a group made up of staff and students from both schools who supported the choices and decisions made in the uniform design,” continued ESC.
“Particularly of note was the work that this group undertook in the development of the Les Varendes High School crest which embodies the vision of the group 3 for the new school’s identity."
The Design Team are now leading on ideas for donating the old LMDC and Grammar uniforms to developing countries.
“They are in the process of developing a scheme to send usable items such as blazers, ties, trousers, skirts and PE kits to charities who support schools and families in need of clothing in developing countries,” said ESC.
“These links with local charities are being established and the new school design team will be working closely with them over the coming months to find the best approach to gathering and sending these items. Alongside supporting the ethos of our Rights and Respecting Schools, this approach ensures schools are thinking of each other, thinking of those less fortunate and thinking about what is best for the environment.”
