Student exhibition runs until September

Sunday 18 August 2019

A selection of work from post-16 art students from all the schools is available to view at Candie Museum's The Greenhouse Gallery.

The exhibition is curated by local photographer Monika Drabot.

"Every year we have the schools show their work, we wanted to show the different media used by the students. Sculpture is very prominent this year lots of big pieces which take a lot of work.

"There's also for the first time an installation piece in which Pip Looijenga will be adding to her piece for an hour at a time. I think the standard is really high, we did an interview with the BBC and the woman said it's the sort of thing you would expect to see at the Tate in London and I absolutely agree.

"One young artist in particular, Tristan Luce was given a 20 minute tutorial in how to use Milliput to create models from which he created small life-like creations which look at armour in its design and artistry not its purpose.

"It's sometimes threatening as a student to make something larger, we've got students who have worked with concrete this year," she said.

Student Jack le Tissier created a minimalist concrete sculpture in response to the theme 'political landscape' which began with trips to Longue Hougue and Mont Cuet. Other work in the exhibition included an arresting piece about the meat industry made from textiles.

Martha Morgan, who is going on to study fashion design at Nottingham Trent University, has created colourful textile carcasses hanging from the ceiling  and was created after Martha researched the industry first hand at Forest Stores.

"When I was at college there were a few sculptors but nothing like this. They're all of really good quality, it wasn't hard to chose a few pieces as part of the exhibition. It was more about curating the space," she said.

The exhibition runs between 10:00-17:00 and is free with a Discovery Pass.
