Strictly star heading for Guernsey!

Wednesday 13 February 2019

One of the star dancers on television's Strictly Come Dancing will be in Guernsey next month, offering his expert advice to local amateurs.

Ian Waite will be the guest of Julie Haimes who runs local 'Fit Step' classes, which are based on moves from ballroom and latin dances.

Mr Waite, fellow ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star Natalie Lowe and six time world champion swimmer, and former Strictly competitor, Mark Foster, all teamed up to create the fitness programme based on their experiences. They say it brings together "fitness and conditioning, to produce a unique dance and fitness programme.."

Classes are offered locally by Mrs Haimes and others, who say it's such an effective way of staying and it's "so much fun you don’t even realise you’re getting fit!"

Mrs Haimes recently won an award for her classes, with Mr Waite, Ms Lowe and Mr Foster giving her the Regional Community Fitsteps Instructor Award for Guernsey and Europe. She was very pleased and said; "I promote this to foster positive mental and physical health."

Through her website, 'Fitsteps Jules Guernsey', Mrs Haimes also says that; "My classes are designed to be fun, friendly and accessible to anybody, regardless of their previous dance experience or fitness levels. The great thing about Fitsteps classes is that anyone can do them."

She also told Express that her members are very supportive. "It was a huge occasion (receiving her award) and lots of my Fitsteppers came to support me. It was amazing!"

The class in March with Mr Waite will be held at Les Beaucamps High School and is described as a 'Fitsteps Masterclass' which is also going to be used as a fundraiser for Guernsey Mind, which is Mrs Haimes' chosen charity for any Fitsteps events she organises. She said she'd like to raise lots of money and everyone is welcome to join in!

As well as the dance class there will be a question and answer session with Mr Waite. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

The class is open to anyone, with more information on 'Fitsteps Jules Guernsey' website, here.
