The States of Guernsey intends now to put in a representation supporting the extension of the Southampton Airport runway, despite a critical vote already having taken place.
The Eastleigh Borough planning committee voted against the extension of the Southampton runway, putting the future of the airport in doubt. Two days were spent analysing representations from campaigners and interested parties before a decision was made.
Both the States of Alderney and the Government of Jersey wrote to the Eastleigh Local Area Committee supporting the extension of the runway, arguing that the Southampton route is essential for the islands. However, the States remained silent on the issue amid media coverage of the proceedings.

The battle for the runway has still got some way to go, with the full Eastleigh Council to meet on 8 April to view the full plans.
“We hope they will listen to the will of the people, the local business community and their own planning team,” said the Airport’s Operations Director, Steve Szalay.
The States has now responded to questions saying that a submission will be made prior to the next scheduled meeting.
“The States of Guernsey will make a formal representation ahead of a final decision on the future of the Southampton runway,” said a spokesperson.
“It is important that the role Southampton plays in the Bailiwick’s airlinks network continues to be widely understood. The Bailiwick values its economic, social, educational and healthcare relationship with Southampton and the surrounding regions.”
