Stargazers encouraged to head to dark sky island

Sark’s astronomy society is hosting a dark skies event for keen stargazers this weekend, followed by a chance to safely observe the sun.

SAstros is hosting a sky-watching event across Friday and Saturday, with numerous opportunities over the two days.

Weather permitting, there will be an observatory session, starting at 20:00 on Friday, to look for Sark’s named star (Star number 1565-600) in Corona Borealis.

The observatory’s powerful telescopes and expert volunteers will also help visitors to watch other stars and planets.

The following day, visitors will be able to try out the society's recently acquired equipment that allows safe observation of the sun.

Sark Observatory will open between 10:00 and 12:00, then again between 14:00 and 16:00 on Saturday, with volunteers on hand to help.

A weekend of astronomy will culminate in a chance to observe the new moon later on evening, starting from 20:00.

The events are open to all and visitors are welcome.
