Staff issues force backlog of cesspit collections

Cesspit collections are being held up by staffing issues at States Works, leading to some incidents of overflowing cesspits.

Guernsey Water has apologised to customers who may have been affected by the situation.

Express spoke to one customer who has had multiple missed collections and experienced their cesspit overflowing onto their neighbour’s property. 

States Works is now putting a call out to people who may be interested in working for the States of Guernsey as a driver or operator. 

Pictured: States Works has 36 tankers and collects roughly 650 loads of sewage a week.

“States Works which operates the service is looking to recruit more drivers on a permanent basis but recognise there is a shortage of licensed operatives not just on island, but nationally,” said a spokesperson for the States of Guernsey.

“It is therefore also exploring other options with staff to alleviate the current pressures.”
